King Richard is a rarity in today’s modern cinematic climate. It’s one of those rare films that I think both cinephiles and average movie goers can equally enjoy and find something to like from it. For the cinephiles, the spectacular performance from Will Smith will be noted and acclaimed. And for the average movie goer, I think they’ll be swayed by the film’s undeniable charm and uplifting story.
We need more films like King Richard, films that aren’t $300 million Marvel movies or $1-5 million Oscar-bait arthouse pieces. We need more films that aren’t afraid to be mid-budget and that can appeal to both the critic and the average Joe. King Richard, in my opinion, does this beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and I hope that Will Smith receives some sort of Academy-attention for his transformative performance as Richard Williams, which is one of the best of his whole career.
